It’s a long-term commitment that could see you jump ahead in your career and earning potential, but it’s not a decision to take lightly. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that project management jobs will grow by about 8 percent from 2016 to 2026, which matches the average job growth for all occupations. Management jobs, in general, tend to pay much more than average, with a median annual salary of $104,240 in 2018. Take a look at some of the considerations to take into account before making the decision to take a degree course in project management. Degrees: Not Required to Get a Job A project management degree is most definitely not required to get a job. Project coordinators start work often without any formal credentials aside from an interest in organization and delivery. Many senior project managers today came into project management from another field, such as software development or healthcare administration. It was their background that gave them the skills required to do a great job, not their education. You can always get a professional certification or a degree in the subject later. However, when the job market is competitive, you may find that having a relevant degree gives you the edge for securing a job. It can also give you a lot of confidence, and many courses will offer placements or some kind of work experience that will introduce you to what the project environment will be like. Again, that gives you extra information for your resume and material to talk about at interview beyond what a week-long project management course can offer. There are many advantages to earning a project management degree, but if the length of time it takes, and the financial commitment, isn’t something you can take on right now, then you can still start your project management career and build on your education later. Degree Programs Online vs. In-Person The main choice you’ll have to make is whether you want to study online or in-person on a campus-based course. Online courses give you greater flexibility and you can choose an institution that if further from home. This could mean picking a course that is a much better match for your interests and career goals. However, studying online can be hard work and lonely if you don’t have a group of peers around you to keep you motivated. Studying in person gives you the benefit of a friendly group of classmates, but it does limit your choices to a  location more unless you have a lot of time and money to spend on travel. Some courses that are taught in short bursts might sound good, but when the reality is using all your vacation time from work to travel to the university campus to study, that can put a real strain on family life or your other commitments. What Kind of Degree to Get? The other choice you’ll have to make is what kind of degree to do. There are project management specialist MBA programs, or if you aren’t sure if an MBA is right for you there are undergraduate (Associate and Bachelor’s) and graduate degrees (Master’s) with project management either as the main subject or a subsidiary subject. Check the syllabus to ensure that project management is covered in enough detail for your needs. Many Associate level degree courses, for example, only touch on project management by offering a course or two, with the rest being other business or management topics. It might make sense for you, for example, to study a construction degree with a project management component. Or to take a nursing degree with a focus on business administration and project management. You’ll get the industry background and a good grounding in project management as well, and you can be sure that case studies, examples and techniques will be relevant to the context you will be using them in. As well as degree courses, many academic institutions also offer short courses or modules in project management which can be taken either as part of a different degree or on a standalone basis. If you can’t commit to a full degree course right now this might be the way to go. A degree in project management can offer you credibility, confidence, deep domain knowledge and skills, along with connections and a network that can support your career for years to come. You may also be able to secure a higher paying job because of your educational background and the experiences it offered you. What Do the Degree Courses Cover? Today you’ll find project management degrees offered by colleges, universities and dedicated business schools. The content of these differs as professors will build courses around their specialist interests and sometimes in conjunction with industry partners - which can be a benefit if you are hoping to find a new job as a result of your studies. Many courses will assume little to no prior knowledge so you can expect to cover the basics of project management before quickly moving on to the more advanced subjects. Typically you’ll get an in-depth look at the fundamentals of project management such as the project life cycle, the roles, and responsibilities of the project team and the project board and risk management. Once you’ve got through the basics you should expect to cover subjects in more detail and perhaps subjects that you wouldn’t necessarily get on a short course, such as responses for managing positive risk. Course Homework Examples Degree programs take a variety of formats so research what your course will expect from you and what fits best with your personality and time schedule. You may have essays to do, a long dissertation or a research project. Some courses that involve work placements require students to write up their experiences. There may also be some reflective work analyzing the successes (or otherwise) or class projects where you work in small groups. It needs to be right for you in so many ways. It’s a big investment, so do your research before making any financial commitments. If you aren’t sure what course to take, see if your target institution offers a MOOC in project management so you can check out the teaching style and the course materials before committing to a full degree. Find an Accredited Course Another factor to take into account is whether your course or school is accredited. There are a number of bodies that accredit universities, including PMI. Taking an accredited course can open up funding opportunities and speed up getting additional qualifications as sometimes what you learn on your degree course can count towards the requirements for professional or accrediting bodies. Accreditation also gives you confidence that you are going to study for a quality degree. It’s also recognized by employers, so that can give you the edge when it comes to applying for jobs later. Alternatives to Project Management Degrees If you can’t commit to a project management degree right now, there are a number of high quality, well-respected project certification schemes instead. PMI is an accrediting body which has a family of credentials that are recognized globally. This could be a good option for you if you need something cheaper and that you can complete faster and yet still have a certification that your employer will find valuable. There are other national project management organizations with their own credential schemes, so you can look into those as well. What Comes After Graduation? Most people who graduate with a project management degree go on to become project managers and work in a project environment. However, it’s a huge field. Leif said, it’s not what you preach. These include, “A leader must lead but also be ready to follow,” and “A leader must be confident but never cocky.”The upcoming book stands on its own but is also a sequel to “Extreme Ownership,” and follows its same format of a lesson followed by a combat example and then a business example.Willink was the commander of US Navy SEAL Team Three Task Unit Bruiser, a highly decorated special-operations unit that fought in the 2006 Battle of Ramadi. Babin was one of his two platoon leaders.We spoke with Willink and Babin about what to expect from their upcoming book.The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity.Richard Feloni: What’s behind the ti tle, and why did you start working on it?Jocko Willink: The new book is called “The Dichotomy of Leadership,” which is also the title of the last chapter in “Extreme Ownership.” As we continued to go out and work with various companies and teams and organizations around the world, we found that one of the areas that people needed help with the most was the area of trying to balance that dichotomy. And the more we worked with people, the more we realized we needed to explore more cases and explain in more detail how people can go too far in one direction as a leader. The title of the book “Extreme Ownership” - obviously it’s got the word “extreme” in there - yet as a leader, oftentimes being extreme is not good. What you have to do is be balanced.Leif Babin: We’re talking to people like the folks at Muster, who have read the first book. Some of them have read it a dozen times. And yet they’re still struggling to try to implement these lessons. And as we say, t hey’re simple, not easy. But the most difficult part of it is trying to find that balance between things like extreme ownership, where you own everything in your world, and “decentralized command,” where you actually have to empower others and allow them to step up and lead. Where you’ve got to be a leader and take charge and not wait for others to solve problems, but also be a follower and go with others’ plans and execute as if it’s your own.Feloni: Can you give an example of a lesson from the new book?Willink: One of the things that we talk about in “Extreme Ownership” is being “default aggressive.” That’s a posture, an attitude, where you’re going to attack problems, and you’re going to get them solved. But at the same time, there can be times where you can become too aggressive. In the SEAL teams, when we were training, we’d say to someone who was being overly aggressive that you’re “running to your death.” You’re running toward the problem without thinking.You’ve got to balance that aggressiveness with also being cautious and making sure you’re assessing the situation.Feloni: Could you share an anecdote from the book that illustrates that concept?Babin: The combat example we talk about there is that we did a lot of things that were very risky, that people thought, frankly, were crazy, or that we took too much risk. We certainly tried to mitigate all the risk that we could control, but we understood the value of those combat operations in Ramadi and what we were doing out there with our Iraqi soldiers and our sniper overwatch missions, and how they supported that campaign.What we don’t really talk about is the ops that we turned down. We turned down a number of operations that we felt were too risky. And I talk about one of those in the book.Willink: One of the business examples that I use in the book is a young CEO who was looking to expand her company, and she saw a lot of growth on the horizon, and so she went and hired a lot of people. She brought these people on board because she expected this big growth to come. There was just a very long turn time on collecting the money from products sold, and it didn’t catch up in time. And so next thing you know, she was losing money. She had a d efault aggressive mindset, which was great, and at the time when I was working with her, I was excited to see that she was being aggressive. But when I actually started looking at the numbers, I realized hey, she’s being overly aggressive, and she’s brought too many people onboard, and now she’s upside down and she needs to get rid of some of these people now or else it’s going to be too late.Feloni: What do you want readers to take away from it?Babin: The biggest thing that we want people to understand in this concept of balance. Oftentimes people think they are doing what we would be doing in a situation, and it’s actually the opposite. We saw that in the SEAL teams, where guys in Task Unit Bruiser attached to us at the end of our deployment and saw a little bit of our operations, and when they went back, they tried to do some things the way they thought Jocko would do them, or I would do them - and they actually weren’t the way we were doing them. Because we really h ad to find that balance.We see leaders doing that, where they say, “I’m going to hold the line. Leif said, ‘It’s not what you preach. It’s what you tolerate,’ so I’m going to crack the whip on my team and we’re going to hold people accountable.” And that doesn’t work. If you’re berating people, if you’re an overbearing leader that’s constantly in people’s face or raising your voice and losing your temper with people, it doesn’t work. It’s not effective. Why Employers Don’t Respond to Job Applications Why Employers Don’t Respond to Job Applications How often have you wondered why employers dont respond to job applications? You read through the job posting. Twice. Your skills and work experience are a perfect match for the responsibilities of the position. You carefully crafted a job application that rivals any Academy Awardâ€"winning speech. You followed the submission process down to the last detail. You hit send and you wait. And wait. But you never hear back from the company you applied for. Sadly, not responding to job  applications has become a growing trend among companies. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 25% of those surveyed said that they never received an acknowledgment after submitting job applications, or worse, were not informed about the hiring manager’s decision after an interview. And to add insult to injury, a staggering 75% of participants claimed that they hadn’t heard back from at least one employer in the past year. Is it simply that employers are rude, or is there something bigger at play here? We decided to find out, straight from the hiring managers’ mouths. We asked them why employers don’t respond to job applications. Here’s what they had to say- anonymously, of course. Providing feedback has legal and liability implications. “I agree that it would be beneficial for a candidate to get feedback from potential employers,” said one former hiring manager. “But it is rare for someone being interviewed to receive specific feedback on how they did because of the legal implications involved and the potential liability the person sharing the information might incur. Candidates dont always commit obvious mistakes. “Hiring is often subjective,” he continued. “Candidate A was more likable than Candidate B, Candidate B answered questions with better examples than Candidate C, and so on. It is often not that a candidate not hired committed an obvious mistake- perhaps a lot of little ones. It is that another person did better, and since the candidate desiring feedback wasnt part of the other candidates interview, it makes it difficult to provide feedback without seeming arbitrary.” Individual hiring managers often need team approval. Said another hiring manager: “Hiring is often a team sport, meaning that I might like a candidate, but the decision of the team is a different candidate. This, too, will complicate the feedback to a candidate.” Employers prefer hiring someone they know or who comes recommended. Another hiring manager had this to say: “The real reason that people do not reply to applicants is the ‘general applicants’ are likely coming from the third or fourth-tier quality of the job leads I get. The best people to hire are ones I have worked with before, and the second best are those who are recommended by people I know and respect. And the third tier are people I may meet at networking events.” Recruiters may be strapped for time. Said this hiring manager: “Many hiring managers don’t follow up because there’s simply not enough time. For each job that we post, there may be hundreds of job applications. Answering each and every one of those would be a full-time job in and of itself.” Hiring decisions are made based on intangibles. An (honest) hiring manager added this: “One reason I wouldnt get back to someone is if I had to tell them something that they couldn’t ‘fix,’ such as their personality. If I didn’t like them, I’m not going to respond back. You don’t want to offend the person- or argue with him- so you stay quiet.” The general consensus from the hiring managers we interviewed was that they don’t respond to the majority of the job applications they receive because of the job applications and the candidates themselves. From not reading the job posting correctly and submitting inaccurate info, to applying for a position that they are not nearly qualified for, many hiring managers opt to directly delete those applications since they feel that the job seeker didn’t take the time to accurately assess their skills and apply for the job properly. What do employers recommend if you dont hear back? So let’s say that you’re an amiable person with the skills and experience you need for a position- but you still don’t hear back. What should you do? Well, one recruiter suggested creating a post-interview checklist, where the candidate self-assesses how they did in the critical areas of the interview. You would need to develop a list of all of the aspects that are part of the job interviews (such as quality of examples given, amount of research done that proved relevant, attire, rapport built with the interviewer, etc.). While this requires you to be objective, this might be the best way for you to determine (in lieu of speaking with the actual hiring manager) just how well you did- and what you can do better next time.

She autographed first-edition copies of the Military to Federal Career Guide, 2nd Edition to military personnel, who might sometime in the near future separate or retire from the military and begin another career in public service as a Civil Servant this time. We were invited by Crew Chiefs of the CH53 Super Stallion Helicopter to come and tour the helicopter and bring our books too! The Crew Chiefs on the Iwo Jima were fascinated with the sample Crew Chef resume and the possible career they can begin if and when they separate or retire someday. These Crew Chiefs were very happy in their current military careers, so, the book was for future planning or friends who were considering a separation. Kathryn Troutman, Zonette Troutman and Kim Schmitt walked down to the Harbor after a busy day at the Book Expo of America to climbed aboard the CH53 for parachute lessons. From the looks of our faces, it seems like we were going to take off any second. After all, his job duty was to drive from restaurant to restaurant, carrying huge kegs of beer and taking out the old, empty ones. And the advantage of this for you is, as you are kind to others, the kindness spreads and people will be helpful to you. Work Hard How does working hard make a job meaningful? Well, hard work often equals success. When you succeed in your job, you help others in your department succeed in their jobs. When your whole department succeeds, the company succeeds. That is pretty meaningful. Additionally, hard work is easier than avoiding work. Think about it: when you have to worry if your boss knows how much time you’re spending surfing the internet, that adds another layer of complexity to your job. When you’re working hard all of the time, and your boss drops by, it’s not a big deal. When you keep on top of your work, you have lowered stress levels. Now, of course, some people are over-burdened and cannot accomplish everything. You might start feeling like “I can’t get everything done, so why bother?” These feelings of stress and failure can pose a huge temptation, but don’t give in. What you do instead is go to your boss and say directly, “I have five tasks on my plate right now. I can do four effectively, or I can do a lousy job on all five. Which two should I skip?” Look Outside of Your Job Does your meaningful work have to be your day job? Of course not. Sometimes your day job can fund your meaningful work. Work-life balance means having a life. Whether it’s through your family, your church, your charity, your art, or whatever is important to you, you need a paycheck to support that. You may consider your job as one that doesn’t contribute to the community and doesn’t make peoples lives better, but if it provides for your family, then it is meaningful. If it allows you to donate to the poor and support meaningful causes, your job is meaningful work. You don’t have to fulfill all of your needs through your paid job. You don’t even need to feel guilty that you’re working for a large corporation rather than a small non-profit. It’s not bad to earn money. You find your meaning in how you can spend that money. Consider Changing Jobs If you just can’t see how your current job is meaningful, and you cant figure out a way to make your job meaningful work, then perhaps it’s time for you to move on. If your job doesn’t bring you joy, doesn’t allow you to support your family or essential charitable causes, and doesn’t help the community, then maybe it’s not the right job for you. No one has a skill set that is so tiny and so unique that there is only one job in the world that would suit them. And if you have no marketable skills, get training in new skills. You don’t have to invest in a college degree if that’s not your goal. You can take online courses. Many MOOCs are free or low cost. You can enroll in a technical or vocational training class. There is no job more meaningful than a plumber, for instance. Think how the world has changed for the better due to running water and functioning sewer systems. No matter your age, you’re not stuck, even if you think you are. You may have limitations based on your current situation, but you’re never truly stuck. If you want to find meaning  in your job and work, figure out what you would need to have for it to become meaningful to you and then go find it.
